Our next event will be a Wabi-kusa Workshop to be held on March 18 from 1:30 – 3:30 at the Garfield Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Avenue, Chicago, IL.
Wabi-kusa are balls of substrate that are covered with plants that are grown in their terrestrial form. These substrate balls are placed directly into a small glass container with some water and then allowed to grow naturally. Substrate ball materials and aquatic plants will be provided along with instruction on how to create and care for this low maintenance living piece of art. Please bring your own container or dish to hold the wabi-kusa when completed.
Entrance to the event is $5 or free for members who have already paid the annual club dues ($15/year). The entrance fee covers the creation of one wabi-kusa ball with plants.
We will also have a SILENT AUCTION during the workshop where you can bid of donations from our sponsors. Following the workshop, members who have paid their dues will have an opportunity to get a “behind the scenes” tour of Garfield Conservatory from one of our members, Neil Gilbert. To make this event even more fun, The Chicago Aquatic Plant Society has decided to make this year’s event a CONTEST, with a PRIZE given to both the winning adult and kid’s Wabi Kusa respectively. The Wabi Kusa balls will be put together at the event, brought home to grow out and then submitted as photos to the board members for judging. More details about the rules for the contest will be provided at the meeting. So, don’t miss your chance to participate in this year’s contest and potentially win the prize for best Wabi Kusa!
