CAPS ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY AND SILENT AUCTION UPDATE

The CAPS annual party was always a fun time to celebrate the holidays, socialize, and purchase some great items donated by our valued sponsors! Unfortunately, CAPS will NOT be holding the annual Holiday Party this year due to COVID concerns. But wait – we will still hold the Silent Auction portion virtually and move that event to our private Facebook Holiday auction page!

We are in the process of collecting donations from our sponsors to support the auction fundraiser and anticipate the event will be held in Nov/early December. Only paid members will be invited to join our Facebook Holiday auction page as this is a paid member-only event. Last year we had items such as tanks, filters, fish food, live plants, wood, rock, gift certificates, subscriptions, and many other items. Each auction item will be designated as either Pick Up Only (in Chicagoland area), or Ship/Pick-Up (shipping fee may apply).

If you are a paid member, you should have received an e-mail with instructions for joining our Holiday auction page. You must be a paid member to request to join the auction page.

If you would like to become a paid member, go to http://www.chicagoaquaticplants.com/join/ to sign up!

Keep a watch on our CAPS page for more details about this event! We are excited to host this event and hope you can attend!

Johnathon Butkus of Oase Living Water

Basics of Aquarium Filtration
August 16th at 7pm CST; Zoom Meeting

The Chicago Aquatic Plant Society is pleased to host Johnathon Butkus, from Oase Living Water, who will be presenting his talk “Basics of Aquarium Filtration”.

Johnathon’s interest in the aquarium hobby started at a young age when he was fascinated with the natural world around him. Like most aquarist, he began with a goldfish tank but his passion for aquariums rapidly grew and he ended up pursuing a degree in Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture. He has worked in many different positions throughout the aquarium industry and has enjoyed everything from breeding fish, to growing aquatic plants, and even fragging corals. His many jobs in the aquarium trade led him to designing, installing, and maintaining numerous filtration systems for saltwater and freshwater aquariums. Johnathon is currently the Midwest Account Coordinator for Oase Living Water, where he supports the full Oase filtration line of products for indoor aquariums and pond water gardens.

As part of this event, CAPS will be raffling an Oase Filtosmart Thermo 200 filter (retail value $150). The raffle will occur at the end of the live presentation. Thanks to Johnathon and Oase Living Water for the donation! If you would like to participate in the raffle, please see the Facebook announcement for further instructions. Scott Fellman of Tannin Aquatics

Blurring the Lines: Mental Shifts, Aesthetics, and Benefits of the Botanical-Style Aquarium
July 11th at 7pm CST; Zoom Link to be provided

Hello CAPS family!

We have a special upcoming virtual meeting featuring Scott Fellman, from Tannin Aquatics, who will be presenting about his most recent endeavor involving use of natural materials to create blackwater and brackish aquariums.

Scott describes himself as the consummate “fish nerd/entrepreneur/provocateur!” and has kept aquariums since he was a pre-schooler. He has traveled all over the US and internationally and has published extensively about his travels and a variety of aquarium related topics in numerous periodicals as well as on his daily blog, “The TInt”. He was the previous co-owner of Los Angeles-based Unique Corals but sold his interest in the company to start Tannin Aquatics, which has curated a collection of all sorts of natural materials, ranging from seed pods to branches, as well as other goods and ideas for specialized aquatic hobbyists. Come join us for this special presentation!

We will also hold a raffle for a pack of assorted botanicals donated by Tannin Aquatics. We will start another Facebook post with more details about how to enter the raffle.

Scott Fellman will select a couple of random numbers to pick raffle winners at the end of his talk. Stay tuned for more details and I look forward to seeing everyone online!

Caps Meeting: April 19th – Cancelled

Date: April 19, 2020

Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Hello CAPS,

Given Governor Pritzker’s recent proclamation extending the “stay at home order” until at least April 30th due to the Covid-19 virus, we will unfortunately need to cancel our meeting for April 19th.

We are hoping to be back by the May meeting, but that will be dependent on how things go with the virus at that time and whether social distancing is extended.

The board is currently looking at resources to bring everyone online content while we are sequestered at home. We will be testing the resources and will then announce an online meeting and hope to do this until we can resume in person meetings.

Stay tuned!

CAPS Wabi Kusa Workshop

Date: March 15, 2020

Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Location: Friendship Park Conservatory

In an abundance of caution and with the increasing spread of Covid-19, the board has made the difficult decision to cancel this weekend’s Wabi-Kusa event. Both federal and state agencies have recommended that people exercise “social distancing” and the board would be remiss if we didn’t exercise extreme caution during this crisis.

The board looks forward to hosting this event each year for our members and we are very disappointed that we have to make this decision. However, we would be irresponsible to put our members at risk with all the uncertainty of the situation. We are hoping to reschedule the event at a later date and will announce the make up date in the future.

Also, we know that some of you joined CAPS and paid the membership fee just to attend the Wabi-kusa Worshop. If you would like a refund of your fee, please contact Eloy Villagran on Facebook or via email at:
info@chicagoaquaticplants.com

In the meantime, please keep checking back to our Facebook page and website for updates on future events and meetings.

Sincerly,

The Board
