Submission Guidelines & Contest Details

-All entries are due Nov 20th 2017. One submission per person only.

-Submit up to three photos of your Wabi-Kusa along with a completed photo release form via email to: info@chicagoaquaticplants.com

-Please submit your email entry with the subject line:  (Entrants Name) Wabi-Kusa Contest –Photos may be adjusted for color correction, brightness, cropping. No other alterations

-A Kids Category is for entrants up to age 12. If submitting for the Kids Category, please specify this in the submission email.

-Results will be announced at the Chicago Aquatic Plant Society December Year End Party and on the CAPS Facebook page. More info on the Party will be announced at a later date. You do not need to be present to win.

Prizes

Winner of the Adult category:  $100.00 Cash and Commemorative Award

Winner of the  Kids category (up to age 12): $50.00 Cash and Commemorative Award

Judging and Criteria:

Judges will consist of the Chicago Aquatic Plant Society Executive Board.  Judges will not be allowed to participate as a contestant.  Judges will not know the names of the entrants until the judging is complete.  The contestant with the highest total points based on the point system outlined below will be the winner.  Adult and Kids categories will be judged using the same point system.

A Wabi-kusa is defined here as a layout of emersed grown, or partially emersed grown aquatic plants. The Wabi-kusa evaluation will also consider any hardscape or container features incorporated into the layout. Any entry deemed by more than one judge to not meet the broad definition presented shall be disqualified.

Points shall be awarded to each entry for the following categories:

  1. Health and Condition: 0-30pts
    1.     Are plants in the layout healthy and free from any undesirable algae or fungal growth?
    2.     If any animals are incorporated in the layout, are they healthy and in a suitable environment to be maintained long term?
  2. Technical Skill: 0-10pts
    1.     Has the artist demonstrated technical skill in the layout through the use of plant arrangement, colors, textures, hardscape, husbandry techniques, and photography?
  3. Natural Impression: 0-10pts
    1.     Does the layout present a natural atmosphere, and is it matured to completeness?     
  4. Overall Impression and Creativity: 0-10pts
    1.     How does the layout appear as a whole including all elements in the photograph?
    2.     Has the artist presented a layout that is unique or especially creative?

CAPS Summer Picnic

Date: July 23, 2017

Time: 12:00pm - 4:00pm

Location: Wood Dale Grove Forest Preserve

Hello Members! Join us on July 23rd for our 2nd Annual CAPS Summer Picnic. Our event will be held from 12:00 – 4:00 at the Wood Dale Grove Forest Preserve in the south picnic shelter in Wood Dale, IL. CAPS will be providing the main dish (chicken or meat) and we ask that everyone bring either drinks, side dish, or dessert to share. Please reply to this post with the total number of people in your party and the dish you will bring. We will also be trading plants and raffling some cool items at the picnic this year. So, if you’re not busy the weekend of the 23rd of July, please join us for some fun and relax with some fellow plantheads! We look forward to seeing everyone at this year’s event.

C.A.P.S. June Meeting – Secrets to a competitive aquascape A to Z

Date: June 11, 2017

Time: 1:00pm -4:00pm

Location: Fountaindale Public Library

The next Chicago Aquatic Plant Society meeting will include a presentation covering Secrets for the Perfect Aquascape. Come learn strategies for keeping a planted tank from start to finish, practical tactics to keep algae out of sight, and how to maximize plant health. The meeting will be between 1:00 – 4:00 pm on June 11th, 2017 and will be located at the Fountaindale Public Library in Meeting Room A on the first floor. 300 West Briarcliff Road Bolingbrook, IL 60440. In case you did not already know, at every meeting we also Trade Plants and have a Giveaway Raffle. So please bring plants to trade. NEW!! CAPS now owns a PAR meter for club use! Please bring your aquarium lights to the meeting as we can do some quick light intensity readings at the end of the meeting. Our meetings are also family friendly so feel free to bring the kids as well.

May GCCA Swap Meet

Date: May 21, 2017

Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Location: Marriott Hoffman Estates

The Chicago Aquatic Plant Society will have a table at the upcoming Greater Chicago Cichlid Association Swap on this upcoming Sunday May 21st to raise funds for the organization. We will be selling hobbyist-grown plants from easy-to- grow to specialty aquatic plants for aquascaping. We will also have mopani wood and possibly some rock and substrates for sale. More info about the swap can be found at http://www.gcca.net/ The swap meets have been our primary fundraising activity, but we need our members help by DONATING PLANTS and coming out to support CAPS. It is not too late to still donate plants, but we need them by Friday 5/19. We have designated three individuals as donation collection sites. Please contact them directly. C.A.P.S. May Meeting – Algae in the Planted Aquarium

Location: Deerfield Public Library

The next Chicago Aquatic Plant Society meeting will include a presentation covering Algae. We will discuss the types of Algae and strategies to control it. The meeting will be between 1:30 – 3:30 pm on May 7th, 2017 and will be located at the Deerfield Public Library in the meeting rooms in the basement. 920 Waukegan Rd, Deerfield, IL 60015.
In case you did not already know, at every meeting we also Trade Plants and have a Giveaway Raffle. So please bring plants to trade or to donate for the swap meet coming up on 5/21. Our meetings are also family friendly so feel free to bring the kids as well.

C.A.P.S. April Meeting – Aquascaping in a Planted Aquarium

The next Chicago Aquatic Plant Society meeting will include a presentation covering Aquascaping in a Planted Aquarium and will discuss some basic principles used to design an aquascape. Techniques for use of hardscape and plant choice and description of various styles of aquascapes will also be covered. The meeting will be between 1-4pm on April 9th, 2017 and will be located at the Fountaindale Public Library in the Board Room on the second floor. 300 West Briarcliff Road Bolingbrook, IL 60440. CAPS March Meeting – Wabi-kusa Workshop

Date: March 18, 2017

Time: 1:30pm - 3:30pm

Location: Garfield Conservatory

Our next event will be a Wabi-kusa Workshop to be held on March 18 from 1:30 – 3:30 at the Garfield Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Avenue, Chicago, IL.

Wabi-kusa are balls of substrate that are covered with plants that are grown in their terrestrial form. These substrate balls are placed directly into a small glass container with some water and then allowed to grow naturally. Substrate ball materials and aquatic plants will be provided along with instruction on how to create and care for this low maintenance living piece of art. Please bring your own container or dish to hold the wabi-kusa when completed.

Entrance to the event is $5 or free for members who have already paid the annual club dues ($15/year). The entrance fee covers the creation of one wabi-kusa ball with plants.

We will also have a SILENT AUCTION during the workshop where you can bid of donations from our sponsors. Following the workshop, members who have paid their dues will have an opportunity to get a “behind the scenes” tour of Garfield Conservatory from one of our members, Neil Gilbert. To make this event even more fun, The Chicago Aquatic Plant Society has decided to make this year’s event a CONTEST, with a PRIZE given to both the winning adult and kid’s Wabi Kusa respectively. The Wabi Kusa balls will be put together at the event, brought home to grow out and then submitted as photos to the board members for judging. More details about the rules for the contest will be provided at the meeting. So, don’t miss your chance to participate in this year’s contest and potentially win the prize for best Wabi Kusa!

March GCCA Swap Meet

The Chicago Aquatic Plant Society will be selling home-grown plants, manzanita and mopani wood at the Greater Chicago Cichlid Association Swap Meet on Sunday, March 5th, from 10 – 2 pm at the Marriott in Hoffman Estates, IL. Come out and support our group as the funds will be used for future events and workshops. We will have everything from easy-to-grow to more rare and harder-to-find plants. C.A.P.S. February Meeting – DIY projects for the planted tank

Location: Deerfield Public Libarary

Join us for the February meeting at the Deerfield Public Library where CAPS member Igor Cialenco will be presenting on DIY  projects for your planted tank.  Igor will be building a nano aquarium from scratch and also a water changing gadget.  Both of these items will be raffled off at the end of the meeting.  If you love doing things yourself this is a great opportunity to come learn about DIY projects for the aquarium

Join us for the January meeting at the Fountaindale Public Library where CAPS president Bailin Shaw will be presenting on the Essentials of the Planted Tank. To start off the new year and all our new members we’re revisiting the basics of planted tanks!  This is a great opportunity to learn and ask any questions you may have about planted tanks.
