Scott Fellman of Tannin Aquatics
Blurring the Lines: Mental Shifts, Aesthetics, and Benefits of the Botanical-Style Aquarium
July 11th at 7pm CST; Zoom Link to be provided
Hello CAPS family!
We have a special upcoming virtual meeting featuring Scott Fellman, from Tannin Aquatics, who will be presenting about his most recent endeavor involving use of natural materials to create blackwater and brackish aquariums.
Scott describes himself as the consummate “fish nerd/entrepreneur/provocateur!” and has kept aquariums since he was a pre-schooler. He has traveled all over the US and internationally and has published extensively about his travels and a variety of aquarium related topics in numerous periodicals as well as on his daily blog, “The TInt”. He was the previous co-owner of Los Angeles-based Unique Corals but sold his interest in the company to start Tannin Aquatics, which has curated a collection of all sorts of natural materials, ranging from seed pods to branches, as well as other goods and ideas for specialized aquatic hobbyists. Come join us for this special presentation!
We will also hold a raffle for a pack of assorted botanicals donated by Tannin Aquatics. We will start another Facebook post with more details about how to enter the raffle.
Scott Fellman will select a couple of random numbers to pick raffle winners at the end of his talk. Stay tuned for more details and I look forward to seeing everyone online!

The next Chicago Aquatic Plant Society meeting will be a special web meeting/presentation hosted by the Greater Chicago Cichlid Association titled ”The Basics of Aquascaping”. The presentation will cover basic principles to create an aquascape, describe various aquascaping styles found in the hobby, and finally finish with some information on how to create your own aquascape.
Given Governor Pritzker’s recent proclamation extending the “stay at home order” until at least April 30th due to the Covid-19 virus, we will unfortunately need to cancel our meeting for April 19th.
We are hoping to be back by the May meeting, but that will be dependent on how things go with the virus at that time and whether social distancing is extended.
The board is currently looking at resources to bring everyone online content while we are sequestered at home. We will be testing the resources and will then announce an online meeting and hope to do this until we can resume in person meetings.
In an abundance of caution and with the increasing spread of Covid-19, the board has made the difficult decision to cancel this weekend’s Wabi-Kusa event. Both federal and state agencies have recommended that people exercise “social distancing” and the board would be remiss if we didn’t exercise extreme caution during this crisis.
The board looks forward to hosting this event each year for our members and we are very disappointed that we have to make this decision. However, we would be irresponsible to put our members at risk with all the uncertainty of the situation. We are hoping to reschedule the event at a later date and will announce the make up date in the future.
Also, we know that some of you joined CAPS and paid the membership fee just to attend the Wabi-kusa Worshop. If you would like a refund of your fee, please contact Eloy Villagran on Facebook or via email at:
In the meantime, please keep checking back to our Facebook page and website for updates on future events and meetings.

The Chicago Aquatic Plant Society is excited to host Vin Kutty at the September 21st meeting. Vin is an avid aquarist and has been keeping plants for the past 30 years. He travels regularly to the Amazon, Africa, or tropical Asia where he often finds new and interesting plants, including some that are suitable for the aquarium.
Vin’s aquascaping style leans towards the classic Dutch style where he can grow his rare plant finds and run experiments to study the effects of nutrients on plant health and growth. His talk will describe some of his interesting findings from his most recent experiments. Vin was a featured speaker at the Aquatic Gardener’s Association international meeting this past May and this talk will inspire you to think differently about how you grow your aquatic plants.
The meeting is from 1-4pm on Saturday, September 21st at the Bolingbrook Fountaindale Public Library in Meeting Room A on the first floor. Feel free to bring plants for trading and we will have our regularly scheduled raffle.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there!!
