Location: Deerfield Public Library

The meeting will include a presentation from CAPS member Michael Kolaczewski titled, “Aroids: Beyond The Aquaria.” While many of us are familiar with certain types of Aroids (family Araceae) such as cryptocoryne used in aquascaping, it is a large family with over 114 genera and over 3,700 species. We will look at some other environments such as terrariums, paludariums, and Wabi-Kusa where aroids can be utilized. Culture, morphology, growing medium, and other topics will be covered. There is a phrase that “Aroiders” use: My Plants Are Weirder Than Your Plants. Come to this lecture and find out why!

Michael Kolaczewski has been a horticulturalist, horticultural consultant, aquatic gardener, and aquarium keeper for over forty years here in the Chicagoland area. He uses many types of plants in his gardening business – native, horticulturally produced plants, as well as tropical, aquatic, emerged, and submerged plants in a variety of projects. He is a member of The International Plant Propagators Society, The International Aroid Society, Aquatic Gardeners Association, and The American Bamboo Society. He became interested in Aroids over twenty five years ago. He currently has over four dozen Aroids in his modest collection.

The meeting will be on October 27th from 1-4pm at the Deerfield Public Library in the meeting rooms in the basement. The library is at 920 Waukegan Rd, Deerfield, IL 60015.
