Wabi Kusa Workshop 2018

Wabi-kusa is an art form that highlights the simple, natural beauty of aquatic plants in an indoor aquatic garden.  The Chicago Aquatic Plant Society invites you to join us at the beautiful Garfield Conservatory in Chicago for a Wabi-kusa Workshop.

We will provide instruction on how to create this small garden and provide the materials and aquatic plants for you to create your own art to take home.  We will provide instruction on how to create a specialized substrate ball, introduce the plants, and care for this low maintenance living piece of art in your home.

Entrance to the event is $5 per person or free for paid members of the Chicago Aquatic Plant Society.

Apet Tour

The next CAPS event will be the tour at Apet, the biggest wholesaler of aquarium livestock in the Midwest!

This is a PAID MEMBER ONLY tour and one of the benefits provided to paid members of CAPS. We do have a limit on the number of people who can go on the tour. We’ll be announcing the system for how to RSVP soon!

If you have been thinking about supplementing your tank with CO2 or just want to improve your plant care this is the meeting for you. In case you did not already know, at every meeting we also Trade Plants and have a FREE Giveaway Raffle. So please bring plants to trade. Our meetings are also family friendly so feel free to bring the kids as well.

CAPS Meeting – Plant Varieties, Placement, and Pruning w/ Workshop

Date: January 20, 2018

Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Location: Fountaindale Public Library

The next Chicago Aquatic Plant Society meeting will include a presentation covering Plant Varieties, Placement, and Pruning. We will also be doing a simple hands on Workshop where you will learn to attach Moss, Buce, Ferns and Anubias to rock or other hardscape. Everyone in attendance will be able to make and bring one home. If you have any of these plants that you would like to donate please message Marvin Lo.
The meeting will be between 1-4pm on Jan 20th and will be located at the Fountaindale Public Library in Meeting Room B on the first floor. 300 West Briarcliff Road Bolingbrook, IL 60440. In case you did not already know, at every meeting we also Trade Plants and have a Giveaway Raffle. So please bring plants to trade. We will also be collecting plants for the 1/28 swap so please trim your tanks and donate as much as you can!!! Our meetings are also family friendly so feel free to bring the kids as well.

C.A.P.S. Holiday Party 2017

The annual Chicago Aquatic Plant Society Holiday Party is coming up, for PAID MEMBERS ONLY!

CAPS will be providing a buffet style lunch for paid members. We will also be having a huge silent auction to raise funds for CAPS to continue our programs in 2018. Items will be donated by our sponsors and a listing will be posted as we get closer to the event. If you are interested in donating to the silent auction, please contact Jo Ann Fujii directly.

We will also have our free raffle and plant trading similar to our monthly meetings so please bring your plants! Winners of the Wabikusa Contest will be announced at the party as well.

We will need an accurate headcount to order the food so please RSVP on Facebook or email us at info@chicagoaquaticplants.com.

December GCCA Swap Meet

The Chicago Aquatic Plant Society will have a table at the upcoming Greater Chicago Cichlid Association Swap on Sunday December 3rd to raise funds for the organization. We will be selling hobbyist-grown plants from easy-to- grow to specialty aquatic plants for aquascaping. We will also have some mopani and manzanita wood for sale. The swap is at the Marriott Hoffman Estates, 4800 Hoffman Boulevard Hoffman Estates, IL. 60192.

The swap meets have been our primary fundraising activity, but we need our members help by DONATING PLANTS and coming out to support CAPS. So if you are interested in donating hold off on trimming your plants, we will be collecting them starting the week of November 27th.

We are all counting down the days until the Aquatic Experience 2017 ! Good luck to everyone who is competing in the Aquascaping Competitions. AE this year is Nov 3-5th and in case you did not already know this will unfortunately be the last year it is in Chicago. So come out and check out AE and stop by the AGA/CAPS table.

CAPS GUEST SPEAKER – “Cool Places with Plants”

The next Chicago Aquatic Plant Society meeting will include a presentation titled, “Cool Places with Plants” which will focus on Biotope Aquascaping. We will have a special guest speaker, Ted Judy !

CAPS SPECIAL EVENT – Aquatic Nursery Tour, Greenhouses, Indoor/Outdoor Ponds

You must be a PAID member of CAPS to attend this special event, more info about becoming a member is below. The next Chicago Aquatic Plant Society event will start at 1:00 pm on Sunday September 10th and will be located at 38W135 Mc Donald Rd. Elgin IL, 60124. Please park on the lawn. The event will be at one of our member’s property and will include guided tours of the Aquatic Nursery. These will include: many indoor/outdoor ponds of water lilies and marginal pond plants, a lotus green house, two aquarium plant green houses, two acid carnivorous plant green houses, rain water collection and soil preparation. CAPS will be providing snacks and refreshments. Feel free to bring plants for trading as we will have a table designated as we typically do.
