2018 Wabi Kusa Contest Guide

  • Submit a single photo of your wabikusa@chicagoaquaticplants.com
    • Entrants must be members of the C.A.P.S Facebook page, or paid members.
    • The submission period will be from October 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018.
    • Entrants must agree to the photo and information release policy on the website.
    • Each person is allowed only one submission.
    • There is one category of participation with no age restriction.  
    • Entry photos may only be altered by color correction, brightness, and cropping.
    • Entries may be rejected, with or without notification to the entrant, for any reason deemed appropriate by the contest judges.
    • Entries may not be posted publicly prior to competition results.
  • Scoring results, any judges’ comments, and the submitted names of the entrants will be announced first on the Chicago Aquatic Plant Society Facebook page and the chicagoaquaticplants.com website prior to the January, 2019 Meeting.
  • Winners will be able to receive their prizes at the January, 2019 Meeting.
    • 1st Place:  $100.00 and Commemorative Award
    • 2nd Place: $ 50.00 and Commemorative Award
    • 3rd Place:  $ 25.00 and Commemorative Award
  • Three judges will be selected for the contest.
    • Judges will be members from the C.A.P.S. executive board or other persons with recognized expertise in aquatic gardening and aquascaping.  
    • Judges are not allowed to participate as contestants.
    • Judges’ comments will be visible publicly with the posted results.
  • “Wabi-Kusa” is defined here as a creative layout of primarily emersed grown, aquatic plants. Judges will award points respective to the criteria categories listed below:
    • Health and Condition: 0-10pts
      • Is the layout healthy and free from any undesirable elements?
      • If animals are incorporated in the layout, are they healthy and in a suitable environment to be maintained long term?
    • Artistic Skill: 0-10pts
      • Does the layout demonstrate artistic skill through the use of arrangement, colors, textures, hardscape, photography?
    • Impression and Creativity: 0-10pts
      • Is the layout especially creative or impactful?
      • Do any other elements of the photograph add to or detract from the impression?
